The painting by Siona Benjamin is called Tikkun Olam. Jews believe that Tikkun Olam is any action that improves the world and moves it closer to the harmonious state it was meant to be in.
When the artist paints a picture of a pale blue female figure on top of a lotus flower, it’s a picture of herself. She looks like a Hindu goddess when she has her seven arms out in the air. However, when you look closer, you can see that her hennaed hands are topped with flames. They don’t call her “goddess.” They call her “mezuza.”
Artist Siona Benjamin is an Indian Jewish person who draws on the styles of illuminated manuscripts, Indian and Persian miniature painting, Byzantine icons, Indian comics, Bollywood, and pop art in her work. The artist says that she is “100% Jewish and 100% Asian.”
