In the early days of the similarly dynamic Indian film industry – Bollywood – Jews played a significant role. A number of Jewish actresses, in particular, grabbed the interest of Indian audiences with their charm and beauty. One of the main reasons for their popularity was the restrictive attitudes toward women on the big screen in Hindi and Muslim India at the time.
1. Ruby Myers
Sulochan is the stage name of Myers, who was born in 1907 and comes from a Baghdadi Jewish family. She was a silent cinema star and one of the highest-paid actresses of her time, appearing in Imperial Studios films frequently alongside Dinshaw Billimoria. She founded Rubi Pics, a film production company, in the mid-1930s. She received India’s highest film honor, the Dada Saheb Phalke Award, for her lifetime accomplishment in 1973. In 1983, she passed away.
