There is no doubt that India’s secularism is in jeopardy. Militant Hinduism is still a powerful force, much like extremist Islam. The ongoing bloodshed in Kashmir is an open wound, and Gujarat’s recurrent outbreaks of religious violence, mixed with memories of the 2006 Mumbai attacks, have heightened tensions. Just talk to a Kashmiri Pandit—a Hindu who has been displaced from that war-torn region—and you’ll understand what I mean.
Despite this, this country of 1 billion primarily destitute people, home to the world’s second-largest Muslim population, manages to retain a strong democratic system founded on religious and ethnic diversity. Diversity is a politically acceptable slogan in the United States. It is a historical fact in India. India, as much as we in the West despise it, has a lot to teach us about religious tolerance.
