My paper is going to look at Ruby Daniel’s memoir, Ruby of Cochin: An Indian Jewish Woman Remembers, which was published in 2002. I’m going to look at how history and identity are shown in the book. It is important because it is the first memoir “written by a Jewish woman from the Indian community of Cochin,” which is a big deal (Irene Eber). Daniel tries to connect many personal histories with the larger histories of the country as a whole while living in Cochin. The writer uses the example of the Cochin Jews to look at how people have thought about the history of the Jewish people and their political goals in the past. Daniel asks critical questions in her memoir, like, who benefits from people claiming that Jewish communities in Kerala are real? How do you know if you are truly Jewish? The writer tries to answer these questions by looking at Jewish history in Cochin and the question of who you are.
