Prof. Shalva Weil, Senior Researcher, Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Seymour Fox School of Education
8 p.m. in Israel
Join us as we journey through the history of a unique community that spans countries and centuries…
Prof. Shalva Weil will look at the remarkable transformations that the Baghdadi Jewish community of India underwent from the late 18th century to their dispersion to various Indian diasporas in Israel and English-speaking countries around the world following India’s independence in 1947.
Baghdadis in India were able to keep their communities together by juggling various identities in a hierarchical and complex culture. We’ll learn about the Baghdadi Jewish community’s tremendous diversity, as well as how they effectively adapted to new situations during the British Raj while keeping certain traditions and changing and embracing others.
