Documentary on Kolkata’s Jewish Community: ‘A Story of a Diaspora of Hope’

This is a real documentary: Dwelling in Travelling (2019), directed by Subha Das Mollick. In an interview, the director described the film as “a diaspora of hope,” noting that Kolkata’s Jewish community “didn’t encounter the same kind of anti-Semitism” as European Jews did.

About the Film

The documentary traces Kolkata’s Jewish community from the 1798 arrival of Shalom Cohen through today’s roughly 20 remaining Jewish residents, featuring the Nahoum & Sons bakery (est. 1902) and real-estate developer David Ezra. It screened at the Mumbai International Film Festival in January 2020.
