At the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, Cantor Aviva Marer is the cantor. She grew up in Canada with a strong feeling of cultural Indian Judaism, having been born into a family of Bene Israel Jews from India. She enjoys educating about her background and was featured in the Smithsonian’s Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shaping the Nation traveling exhibit in 2014.
With the acclaimed choral ensemble Essential Voices USA, she has performed twelve gigs at Carnegie Hall.
Cantor Marer delivered the world premiere of Heinrich Shalit’s choral piece “Song of the Sun” after being ordained from the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music at Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in 2013. Her husband, Jim, and their two young children, Benjamin (7) and Sofia (5), reside with her (2).
