Cochin Jews, Bene Israel, Baghdadi Jews, Bnei Menashe, and Bene Ephraim are among India’s five different Jewish communities.
The Cochin Jews claim to be India’s oldest Jewish community, having arrived around the time of King Solomon in Cochin, now part of the South Indian state of Kerala.
Following the fall of the Second Temple in 70 C.E., more Jews immigrated to Cochin, and in 379 CE, the Hindu monarch, Sira Primal, granted Jews the right to own land and openly practice their faith. These decisions were subsequently written down on copper plates. During the 15th and 16th centuries, some Sephardi Jews fled persecution in the Iberian Peninsula and were known as Paradesi Jews.
