Meetings between the Prime Ministers may not make much of a difference to Israeli tourists visiting India, but they provide crucial optics for Indian Jews living in Israel.
National dailies informed us that India and Israel are “celebrating 25 years of friendship,” and that Israeli technology in drip irrigation and soil-water management will help water-stressed farmers in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
Two thoughts sprang into my head as I read these stories praising Israel’s agricultural wonders and defense capabilities. First, there’s Betzalel Eliyahu, an Israeli agriculturist and Pravasi Bharatiya award recipient whom I interviewed a few years ago in Israel’s parched Negev region. Eliyahu is a Jew from Kerala.
