MYSORE, INDIA (JTA) — MYSORE, INDIA (JTA) — Christmas in Kolkata has always been a festive occasion, from the sparkling exterior lights that adorn Park Street to the bustling pop-up Christmas market in the central rotunda of the enormous New Market.
While the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the devastating aftereffects of Cyclone Amphan, which devastated the city in May, have tempered celebrations this year, Isaac Nahoum, a Jewish baker who has seen sales drop from more than 300 customers a day to a paltry 30 on average, is unconcerned. The Christmas rush is still in full swing.
“This was a significant setback.” Fortunately, we have the resources to continue,” he added of his family-owned bakery, Nahoum & Sons, which has been around for 118 years. “And, as I’ve previously stated, things will pick up next year.”
