Around Cochin at the turn of the twentieth century, the pardesi and Malabari Jews were a happy bunch. However, as time passed and the only country in the world that had never mistreated Jews gained independence from the British, the entire Jewish community of the region began to leave on their Aliyah, or call. There are now only a few hundred left. There have been books written on them, anthropological studies completed, and films made about them. People who immigrated to Israel authored books on their experiences in Kerala in the past and present, while others wrote about them, and a few still return to India to see their old homes and fulfill their last desires before moving on to the next world.
